"There's Film in Lansing".. and Music Too!

The first annual Capital City Film Festival declares, “There’s film in Lansing.” Premiering in Michigan's state capital on April 14, the four-day festival finally brings local movie-lovers what they have been waiting for... talented Michigan-made films created by independent artists incorporating a medley of genres.

Capital City Film Festival now announces, "There's music in Lansing too!" While films will be featured in various venues in Lansing from April 14 to April 17, festival attendees are invited to complete their day while enjoying nightly live music performances by nationally acclaimed and local musicians. The Festival tickets will grant access to the viewing of the daily events including the viewing of films. The tickets for the nightly performances are separate from that cost.

To commence the Capital City Film Festival, The Loft in downtown Lansing will present the opening night party on Thursday, April 14. The Midwest-based indie rock group, Margot & the Nuclear So & So’s, will headline the night with performances by Maps and Atlases, The Blue Cords, and DJ Rachel P. playing downstairs in the Harem Lounge VIP room. The doors to The Loft will open at 7:00p.m. and will welcome all ages. Tickets are $15 in advance and can be purchased here.

Following the screening of the documentary “Respiration: Feel the City Breathing” directed by Matt Orlieb on April 15, the Loft will present a Hip-Hop spectacular featuring Detroit Rapper Danny Brown and other local acts, Othello, Third Coast Kings, SelfSays, Buff1, and DJ Ruckus. Doors open at 9p.m. with the Blat!Pack hosting the event. Tickets are $15 in advance and will be available soon at the Loft's website.

Hometown Rock Crown: Local Talent's Battle for the Throne

For 24 local bands who work hard to promote their music, the fourth annual 97.5 Now FM Hometown Rock Crown is presenting them with a golden opportunity to showcase their musical talents to the local mid-Michigan community and claim the throne as the Hometown King of music.

Presented by several local businesses– Splash of Color Tattoo, Music Manor, Tanzmania Tanning, REVUE Magazine, Life in Lansing and Media Advantage– and hosted by Gravy from 97.5 Now FM, the Hometown Rock Crown will resemble a familiar “American Idol” format. Three respected members from the music industry will be judging the contest. The final vote will be based on the judge’s scores, the ticket presales, and the crowd votes.

The contest was open to all ages and welcomed a variety of musical genres. Over 100 bands submitted into the contest and 24 talented bands were asked to participate. Now, these chosen bands will have to “fight it out” in order to receive the ticket to advance to the final round. Each week for four weeks, six bands will perform at the Loft in downtown Lansing. One band from each week will progress to the final round on May 7th where a representative from a major record label will be in attendance.

The title as the Hometown Rock Crown will yield valuable rewards for one deserving band. To name a few prizes, the winner will receive $500 in cash, a cover story in REVUE Magazine, studio time, and one of their songs will be played on 97.5 Now FM.

To kick off the five-week competition, the bands Na Style Jaa, Versus the Ocean, Naiswan, Red Tin Trio, The Sunset Club and ThrillTrain will perform at the Loft in downtown Lansing on April 2nd.

The second week will showcase The Specktators, Sosaveme, Amir Pakray, The Classic, Stikyfüt, and Catalina Wine Mixer at the Loft in downtown Lansing on April 9th.

During the third week, Vinacious, Tree Hut Kings, Jimmy Flint, Finding Bliss, Goat Machine and The Blue Effect will perform at the Loft in downtown Lansing on April 16th.

The fourth and final week of preliminaries will feature Billiards Music, Green Skeem, Lyric’lee, Daybreak, Blissfield and Chris Rozsell and his band at the Loft in downtown Lansing on April 23th.

Lansingmusic.TV: Recording the Sights and Sounds of Lansing Music

After combining creative energies and a passion for music, three students at Lansing Community College- Sean Bradley, Casey Cavanaugh and Austin Howard- concocted a project called Lansingmusic.TV. Formed in the spring of 2010, Lansingmusic.TV is an online music source which provides viewers with a visual and auditory experience of Lansing talent such as Cheap Girls, Elliot Street Lunatic, Frontier Ruckus, and The Amature. The concept behind the project is to offer a personal view and intimate listen of local talent through filmed interviews and live concerts and also recorded acoustic performances.

Recently, Lansingmusic.TV received a grant via Austin Howard from the city of Lansing which provided them with production equipment to produce monthly content for Lansing's public access. Their debut on the city's broadcast will occur sometime in April.

The rest of the year for Lansingmusic.TV will be spent working with Lansing’s own Elliot Street Lunatic while making a documentary that reveals the processes involved in constructing their upcoming album. Lansingmusic.TV will also be recording the local videogame cover band, Year 200X, as they play an anime convention in Lansing called Shuto Con.

Frontier Ruckus at The Loft, March 26

There is sure to be a tuneful ruckus on March 26 when East Lansing’s folk-rock, Frontier Ruckus, headlines at the Loft in Lansing. Frontier Ruckus, originally assembled in the Michigan State college town, has been touring the world (yes, Europe was involved) promoting their lyrical, Michigan-influenced ensemble and is back to play for their home-base.

Frontier Ruckus was sparked by two metro-Detroit high school students, Matthew Milia and David Winston Jones. When Jones attended the University of Michigan, Milia went to the rival Michigan State University. In East Lansing, the band developed into a six-piece group with the addition of drummer Ryan Etzcorn, vocalist Anna Burch, bassist Eli Eisman, and multi-musician Zachary Nichols.

Last year was a busy year for the band; In February they recorded an in-studio Daytrotter session and became a four-member team (when Eisman and Burch left). With the release of their album Deadmalls and Nightfalls they toured all the way to Europe and then returned to the states to play at Bonnaroo 2010- a set which Rolling Stones Magazine listed as a “must-see.”

Come join Frontier Ruckus on March 26 when they team up with other Michigan folk artists, Sacred Strays and Jeff Pianki, and return to the city which originally brought all the Ruckus members together.

Have you ever had the urge to walk on top of glass, eat a ball of fire, or swallow a sword? Well, here is your chance to experience these life-threatening and dicey maneuvers without risking your fragile life. The Pretty Things Peep Show, presented by Pretty Things Productions, will be featured at the Loft in downtown Lansing on Sunday, February 27. This traveling vaudeville phenomenon features the best in burlesque and sideshow.

Pretty Things Productions never takes a break from touring the globe- providing global entertainment and astonishment- and also never ceases to amaze audiences. This one-of-a-kind show will feature the thrilling team of the sexy sword-swallowing Miss Heather Holliday, chainsaw-juggler Donny Vomit, vaudeville vixen Go-Go Amy, and the “midget of mischief” Lil Miss Firefly. Glass will be walked on, contortionists will bend at extreme angles to amaze, and you can't forget the dancing, comedy, singing, and even the cracking of whips.

Frost Fest 2011

January was cold and February is not expected to get any warmer but, hey, at least the city of Lansing knows how to heat things up. On Saturday, February 19, the second annual Frost Fest presented by Downtown Lansing Inc. will turn the 200 block of S. Washington St. into a festive glacier. Beginning at 6p.m, Frost Fest welcomes everyone to come out and party like an Eskimo while playing euchre, listening to live music, drinking up special microbrews…all you really need for the night are some snow-shoes and earmuffs.

This event is for those chilled, beer-drinking winter-enthusiasts, Valentines Day lovers who want to continue the holiday, Valentines Day haters who want to forget the holiday, euchre-extraordinaires, music-lovers, and those who simply just want to chill and have a good time (pun intended). To make sure no one freezes, the event takes place within a heated tent to thaw off in.

Throughout the night, enjoy the “Plaid Penguin,” the exclusive Frost Fest Microbrew, and Badass American Lager. Live music starts at 7p.m. with performances by Joe Hertler and the Rainbow Seekers, and Elliot Street Lunatic. Atomic Tom is headlining Frost Fest on their Rolling Sound and Ready Lights Tour and will take stage at 9:30p.m.

Don’t get cold feet when playing the “Cold Butt Euchre” game, which starts at 8p.m. The seats are made of ice which means that only the true Eskimo will be the champion, winning a cash prize of $250 bucks. Nathan Kalish and the Wildfire at The Loft, February 11, 2011

Mark your calendars because February 11 is going to be a rockin’ night full of alternative-folk, country, blues, and of course, rock n’ roll, at the Loft in downtown Lansing. Grand Rapid’s Nathan Kalish and the Wildfire are traveling eastward and will be joined by other friends from around the mitten; country-rock Dirt Road Logic, folk Jack Grendel and the Twelve Armed Bandits, and the lovely Cat Midway.

You may remember Kalish’s face plastered on the front of our June 2010 music issue in Revue West Michigan; long haired, bearded, and looking like a badass. It is a hard face to forget.
After a year full of touring, a solo release by front-man Kalish, and a boat-load of exciting press in 2010, the Wildfire are making the Midwest proud as they maintain their pace into the New Year.

The music of the Wildfire is a mix between the vocals of Jack Johnson and a younger Tom Petty during his American Girl days with a thick layer of rock and rock. They truly capture the essence of good ole quality American music; a little folk, a splash of country, and a lot rock.

Hitchcock's The 39 Steps climbs up to Mount Pleasant

Hold on to your hats, kiddies. (Assuming you're actually wearing hats. Frankly, who really does that anymore?) This weekend, over at the Broadway Theatre in Mount Pleasant, Alfred Hitchcock's The 39 Steps makes its way into our mind's eye, leaving a trail of fearful suspense in its impressive wake.

A production of the Bullock Creek High School Theatre, The 39 Steps combines the heart-stopping thriller aspects of the original Hitchcock film with an unprecedented injection of slackstick and general hilarity. You might just end up busting a gut – and we mean that in the scary way, too.

"A BackStage Pass Christmas" is a special performance featuring holiday favorites with original pieces by The Verve Pipe and The String Doctors.

All of the featured performers in the upcoming season of WKAR's "Made in Michigan" music series are included, providing a "sneak peek" into the upcoming season that premiers Jan. 20 on WKAR.

BackStage Pass is WKAR's "music made in Michigan" series. It begins a new season with nine acts ranging from blues to classical, tropic rock to jazz, along with several additional compilations.

Catch a preview of the new season when A BackStage Pass Christmas premieres on Thursday, Dec. 16 at 11 p.m. with a primetime repeat on Thursday, Dec. 23 at 10 p.m.

The new season begins Thursday, Jan. 20 at 10 p.m. with Those Delta Rhythm Kings. Shrek the Musical Coming to East Lansing

Lansing Symphony to present Songs of Winter

The Lansing Symphony will present a very unique MasterWorks program called, "Songs of Winter" on Dec. 4 at 8 p.m. at Wharton Center for Performing Arts. The program features three works that set the tone for the holiday season, no matter how you celebrate.

Beginning with "Winter" from Vivaldi's Four Seasons, featuring Concertmaster Seunghee Lee, then the MSU Choral Union and Chorale will join the orchestra. Together, they will present John Rutter's When Icicles Hang, a great collection of songs using poetry to celebrate winter.

The final piece on the program is truly monumental: Ernst Bloch's Sacred Service (Avodath Hakodesh), which was the first large-scale setting of the Jewish Sabbath Service for orchestra, cantor, and chorus.

Lansing Media/Theatre Project

In an effort to offer the Lansing community with an opportunity to explore cutting edge Broadway technology, Michigan State University and Riverwalk Theater announce the launch of the Lansing Media/Theatre Project (LM/TP).

The LM/TP is offering a series of three workshops during November 2010 and March 2011 with a production in June 2011. The aim of the program is to educate area artists interested in theatre, design and performance art.

Last Comic Standing at Jackson Community College

Following its seventh season of bringing a taste of the best comedy this country has to offer into the homes of countless Americans, NBC's Last Comic Standing is now touring five of its most recent top comedians.

Their next stop: Mid Michigan.

Season seven winner, Felipe Esparaza will be joined by fellow contestants Tommy Johnagin, Roy Wood, Jr., Myq Kaplan and Mike DeStefano at Jackson Community College's Potter Center tomorrow, Nov. 6 at 8 p.m.

Mary Poppins Comes to Wharton Center

Perhaps for most of us, the Mary Poppins we remember is a bold, yet generous nanny with the heart of a child and the hand of a magician. It was the 1964 Disney film that painted this idealistic picture of the woman who claims to be, "practically perfect in every way." However, this is far from the original Mary Poppins who, as an edgy, overbearing authority figure, was the subject of the popular P.L. Travers children's novels. It is this Mary Poppins, the one who can be "downright rude," that East Lansing will be hosting throughout the month of November. Harlem Globetrotters Coming to East Lansing Breslin Center

As a part of the 85th consecutive season of their athletic, theatric and comedic act, the legendary Harlem Globetrotters are bringing their 2011 "4 Times the Fun" World Tour to East Lansing this winter.

The anniversary tour will consist of more than 270 games in more than 220 cities in 45 states and six Canadian provinces between December 2010 and April 2011. Throughout the years, the Harlem Globetrotters have played in 120 countries and territories on six continents for more than 132 million fans.

LCC Theatre presents A View from the Bridge

A View from the Bridge is Arthur Miller's taut and compelling drama about Eddie Carbone, a Brooklyn longshoreman who has raised his niece, Catherine. He agrees to house two illegal immigrants from Italy. When his niece falls in love with one of them, Eddie's life erupts into jealous passion, bringing tragedy to his world.

The drama is in its final production of this year's Stages of the Law Theatre Festival. The festival is sponsored by the Thomas M. Cooley Law School. Now in its fifth year, the festival includes law-themed plays presented by Mid-Michigan Family Theatre, Lansing Civic Players, Stormfield Theatre, Riverwalk Theatre, and LCC Theatre.

Riverwalk Theatre presents Gretchen Foster art show

Riverwalk Theatre, a non-profit organization, announces an art show in its newly remodeled lobby by local artist, Gretchen Foster, until Nov. 30. She has been a painter and potter for more than thirty years.

Gretchen's show features watercolors of various subjects and landscapes. The show is free, and viewers are invited to attend during the regular daytime hours, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday through Friday, as well as during evening and weekend performances.

She studied graduate oil painting at Michigan State University with Ralph Henricksen and Clif McChesney and watermedia painting with Richard O’Malley and Mark Mehaffey. She is also a co-founder of the Greater Lansing Potter’s Guild and holds a PhD in English from Michigan State University, where she taught for 15 years.

Breslin Center Management Restructured

In an attempt to ease the process of managing booking, ticketing and event servicing for live entertainment events on the campus of Michigan State University, the Division of Residential and Hospitality Services at MSU has announced a restructuring related to the management of the Jack Breslin Student Events Center.

MSU's Wharton Center for Performing Arts currently manages four campus venues including Cobb Great Hall, Pasant Theatre, MSU Concert Auditorium and Fairchild Theatre. Effective immediately, Wharton Center for Performing Arts will also manage programming, marketing and ticketing for all entertainment events at Breslin Center. Residential and Hospitality Services staff will continue to coordinate facility operations and Spartan Athletics will continue coordinating men's and women's basketball.

Lansing Art Gallery Seeks Artists for Holiday Art Market

A longstanding tradition, the Holiday Art Market in downtown Lansing continues to provide the community with a place to view and display artwork during the holiday season year after year. Showcasing the work of more than 100 artists from across the state, the Holiday Art Market is presented by Lansing Art Gallery, located just steps from the Capitol, making it accessible to more than 47,000 downtown employees, students and visitors.

With the 2010 holiday season just around the corner, the Lansing Art Gallery is seeking Michigan artists to exhibit during this year’s Holiday Art Market. To be eligible, artists must be 18 years of age, and all artwork must be original, completed within the last three years and ready for display and purchase.

Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers at The Loft

After the recent release of their “VivaCast” CD/DVD Turbo Ocho in 2008 and their live, web-only album Glow in the Dark in 2009, Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers have been reinventing what it means to play rock and roll in the 21st century, and, as presented by Fusion Shows, they will be lighting up the stage at The Loft in downtown Lansing this Sunday, Oct. 10.

As the only independent band to debut in the Top 10 of Billboard’s Internet Sales chart for six consecutive albums, this alternative country rock group bears a number of respectable accomplishments. The band’s lead vocalist, Roger Clyne, and drummer, P.H. Naffah, played with late-90’s rock band The Refreshments, producing multiple hit singles. Clyne also wrote and performed the theme song for the cartoon King of the Hill along with The Refreshments.

Jars of Clay Coming to Lansing

An eclectic band that loves holidays, a good read, and spreading the word of God, the Christian rock band Jars of Clay claims to have “no Jars of Clay sound.” Perhaps, they say, that’s precisely what allows them to bridge the generational gaps that they do. The band seeks to inspire fans by writing about things that we can universally relate to. But their message doesn’t stop with their lyrics. The band is also involved with an organization determined to help fight AIDS in Africa. Friends, kinsmen, countrymen. But especially friends. Come gather on October 7 for the debut run of Among Friends, the first in what promises to be a successful series of fully-staged productions at Lansing's latest theatrical undertaking, the Stormfield Theatre.

Running through October 31, Among Friends tells the tale of three friends who maintain a regular ritual of playing poker together. But when one is caught in the act of stacking the deck, well, let's just say a different breed of card house comes crashing down in spectacular fashion. Written and directed by Lansing theatre legend Kristine Thatcher, the play is a part of the 5th Annual Stages of Law Theatre Festival series, sponsored by Cooley Law School.

Stormfield Theatre strikes Lansing

Lightning may not too frequently strike twice, but upon hitting its mark, serves as an agent to fertilize the very body of our terrestrial sphere. Such is the case with Lansing's latest theatrical contribution, Stormfield Theatre, a hotbed of local thespian and writing talent that provides a flash of freshness to the Capitol City. Although the theatre materialized a year ago, its first staged production won't commence until October 7. (More on that in a future post.)

But for now, let's abbreviate our schedules for a mere moment to learn about Stormfield. As their website declares:

Stormfield Theatre is a not-for-profit theatre dedicated to living playwrights and their works. A home for the development and production of brand-new, and newly established work, Stormfield encourages an ethnically and culturally diverse community of artists and audiences united in support of emerging and veteran dramatists who bring to the stage stories that illuminate our times while they delight and entertain.

But wait; remember that whole shebang about lightning refusing to strike twice? Well, bollocks to that. In this instance, anyway. With the birth of Stormfield, we're also treated to a career resurrection of sorts from one Kristine Thatcher. You may recall the hue and cry raised last year over what many perceived as the unjust termination of Thatcher from the BoarsHead Theatre - itself now an out-of-work entity. Now, reincarnated as the artistic director of Stormfield, we're expecting a litany of greatness from Thatcher. Her work will undoubtedly be greeted with a chorus of thunderous applause. (Okay, that was the last storm-related pun, we swear!)

River City Extension Coming to Lansing Friday

Born from an artistic blend of everything from acoustic bass to banjo and cello, River City Extension is more than just another indie rock band. In combining punk, country, folk and world music with a classic orchestral flare, this 10-piece band creates a unique sound that they will be bringing to Mac’s Bar in Downtown Lansing on Oct. 1.

Originally from Toms River, NJ, River City Extension has most recently been performing on the sold-out Lydia farewell tour and will be taking a day off from their tour with Saves the Day for this upcoming stop in Lansing.

Local punk act Hot Goss and folk artist Carter Moulton will be opening for the band.

After being inducted into the Song writers Hall of Fame in 1982 and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1988, Bob Dylan's Time Out of Mind won the Grammy for Album of the Year in 1998. Dylan’s most recent album, Modern Times, has sold more than 2.5 million copies to date and entered the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart at number one.

Mid-Michigan based concert promoter FusionShows is welcoming students back to the Lansing area this fall with acts from a number of local bands starting Friday, Sept. 17.

Local progressive rock/metal band Bloodletting is headlining the night along with other area acts including reggae/ska band Res Publica, “Dark Reggae” group Souldub, and punk/rap band Giraffe Attack.

Doors open at 7 p.m. at The Loft in Downtown Lansing. Tickets are $7 in advance and $10 at the door. Guests 18 and up are welcome to attend.

Local Artist Featured at Lansing Art Gallery

Commercial illustrator, fine artist, and entrepreneur Barbra Hranilovich will be giving a hands-on public demonstration of her encaustic painting (hot wax painting) techniques Thursday, Sept. 9 from 12 p.m. – 2 p.m. at the Lansing Art Gallery.

Not only has Hranilovich been recognized both locally and nationally as the recipient of numerous awards, but her works have also been published in a wide range of books and magazines.

As the recipient of the 2010 Emerging Artist Grant from the Arts Council of Greater Lansing, her use of vibrant colors in both 2- and 3-dimensional works conveys her belief that “we are all more alike than different.”

Hranilovich’s featured ceramic and encaustic works will be on display at the Lansing Art Gallery Sept. 3 – 30.

Rebel Pictures to host fundraiser for third feature film

Attention film-lovers: here's your chance to get a sneak peek at an upcoming film, as well as help aid in the film's completion. Rebel Pictures is set to release their third feature film, Lucky, in 2011. A fundraiser will be held on Sunday, June 27 at 6 p.m. at Brannigan Brothers restaurant in Lansing. Guests will have the opportunity to view a portion of the film and meet cast & crew while enjoying great food and live music from Sam Corbin & Wesley Tkaczyk, whose music was featured in the film.

Rebel Pictures' first film, Fairview St. (2009), went on to 16 film festivals nationally and won eight major awards. The second film from the company, Handlebar (2010), was just accepted into its first film festival and won an Award of Merit at the Indie Fest in La Jolla, California. Lucky is expected to have the same success.

Silver Bells to Change Hands

Lansing's signature holiday event will be hanging out an "under new management" sign soon.

The Arts Council of Greater Lansing announced this morning it will turn over management of the Silver Bells in the City event this year. The Arts Council, which created and produced the event with the City of Lansing and thousands of volunteers for 25 years, will hand over the baton to the Lansing Principal Shopping District for 2010.

Launched in 1984, Silver Bells has evolved from humble beginnings into a premiere Mid-Michigan event which includes an electric light parade, the lighting of Michigan's official Christmas tree and fireworks over the state Capitol.

"It is with much pride for the success that Silver Bells in the City has achieved and its positive impact on the greater Lansing community that the Arts Council transfers coordination of the event," said Leslie Donaldson, executive director of the Arts Council of Greater Lansing. "We plan to focus on the more immediate needs of our constituents who have been affected by recent cuts in public funding to the arts. We are confident the rich tradition of Silver Bells will continue under the leadership of this long-time community partner."

"The Arts Council has done an amazing job of coordinating and growing Silver Bells in the City over the years into the region's signature holiday event," said Mindy Biladeau, executive director of the Lansing PSD. "We are honored to be able to coordinate this event this year and to carry on the tradition for generations to come. That's the numbers on Bled Fest 2010, an all-day -- and all-ages -- celebration of high-energy rock music in Livingston County. Held at the Hartland Performing Arts Center on Saturday, May 29, this year's Bled Fest features a variety of national and Michigan-based bands.

This year's headliners are Syraucse, NY pop-punchers Polar Bear Club, who'll be joined on the daylong bill by Misery Signals, The Bled, Strike Anywhere, and more. Over 200 quilts will be on display, including quilts that will be donated to Ele's Place for their youth grief camp to be held in June 2010.

The Lansing Area Patchers quilt guild prides itself on the many charity quilts that we provide to the community,' says LAP President Denise McGinn. 'Each year we donate approximately 400 or more doll quilts to the Salvation Army, and between 25-70 quilts to Ele's Place. The quilt show will highlight these efforts.

The show will also feature quilt vendors, live demonstrations, door prizes, silent auction, garage sale of slightly used quilt supplies/books, and a UFO Rescue, where quilters can purchase unfinished projects started by other quilters. Quilters and non-quilters will appreciate both the artwork and craftsmanship of the quilts on display.

If you are looking for something to do in the Mid-Michigan area this evening, POP, an MSU student organization dedicated to bringing in talent at affordable prices for students, is hosting "Born to Flow."

The event will feature hip hop/ slam poetry, headlined by Black Milk. Jamaal "Versiz" May and the MSU Slam Poetry team will also perform. May is a 2-time Detroit Slam champion, and he released his book, "The Good Engine," last year.

Black Milk has released 5 full albums since 2005, and been featured as a collaborator on many more. He has worked with acts like Busta Rhymes and GZA during his successful career.

The show starts at 8 tonight (April 2), at the Erickson Kiva, in Erickson Hall on the campus of MSU. Student tickets are $5; $8 for non-students. You can buy them at the door, or at Flat, Black and Circular beforehand.

Seeing RED

Wed. March 25, a new concept will literally 'pop up' to help out the Red Cross. RED, a pop-up art gallery will open in Jackson at 159 W. Michigan Ave, in the old Huron Camera building from March 25-30.

The gallery will sell work from various artists in several different price ranges, 60% of which will go to the Red Cross. There will be a red carpet opening reception from 7-10 p.m. on the 25th, and tickets are available here, for $25, or for $35 at the door. The event will feature performance art, catered hors d'ourvres and a signature RED cocktail.

After the 25, the gallery will be open during the day to the public, and will host events in the evening. Friday the 26, Jacktown Connect and Questions for Jackson -a young professionals organization- will host an event from 7-10 p.m. Other evening events are to be determined, and will be posted on this blog as information becomes available.

RED, which is taking place in a currently vacant building will hopefully raise money for the Southeastern Michigan chapter of the Red Cross, as well revitalize and renew interest in the district. The art on display will include items from classic to controversial, and everything in between.

"Celebration" for Lansing filmmakers

"Handlebar," (rated "R")the new feature length film by Michael McCallum and Shane Hagedorn opened to crowds of more than 300 at Lansing's Celebration Cinema. The film's world premier is really more like a week-long exhibition with shows daily this Fri., Sat., and Sun. at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Handlebar was written and filmed in Michigan with Michigan actors and crew. Even the musical score is by Lansing band Eightball Grifter.

"Utilizing the talent here means the world to me...You don't have to go to NYC or LA for talent. It's here," said McCallum.

Handlebar is described as a comic thriller, with cues taken from comic geniuses like Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor, who McCallum and Hagedorn cite as inspirations.

The DVD is being released in conjunction with the premiere, so if you can't make any of the showtimes, grab the dvd and stimulate the Michigan economy by supporting local talent.

It ain't bragging if it's true.

A few years ago, Michigan brewers adopted the tagline Michigan: The Great Beer State. It appears that beer drinkers and brewers from around the world agree. Michigan brewers ranked quite highly in the annual poll by RateBeer, which takes into account more than 2.47 million reviews of 110,000 beers worldwide.

Founders, Bells, Kuhnhenn, Dark Horse, Short's and Jolly Pumpkin were all just named to the prestigious list of the top 100 brewers in the world at at No.'s 4, 5, 22, 34, 64 and 67 respectively. Founders, Bell's, and Kuhnhenn also had beers in the top 100 of the world, with Founder's KBS ranking the highest at No. 8.

Short's, Kuhnhenn, the Livery and Dark Horse were ranked in the top 50 of all U.S. brewpubs and Dragonmead was named one of the best to visit. Hopcat came in at #22 in the world wide list of beer bars and Siciliano's was ranked #39 on the list of bet beer retailers.

You have several upcoming chances to sample these beverages in the coming month. Traverse City will have its first Winter Beer Fest Feb. 12, and The Michigan Brewer's Guild Winter Beer Fest at Fifth Third Ball Park will take place Feb. 27.

WKAR launches online listening

Move over Pandora.

WKAR Radio had launched several online-only music listening streams available at the WKAR.org website. The streams include folk, jazz, classical as well as NPR programming.

WKAR Folk Alley features non-stop folk, ranging from bluegrass to Celtic, World Music, and traditional folk. In addition to such NPR programming as “The Thistle and the Shamrock,” listeners can enjoy encore broadcasts of Bob Blackman’s “The Folk Tradition.”

WKAR Jazz features jazz in every style, from bebop to Dixieland, big band swing to contemporary. Included are encore broadcasts of Doug Collar’s “Jazz ‘til Midnight” and the new “Dan Bayer Jazz Show,” featuring WKAR’s own Dan Bayer.

WKAR Classical is all-classical, all the time, with Mark Schwitzgoebel and Jody Knol during the daytime hours of 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The music continues with a variety of other hosts.

Christmas Pageant Present, directed by Bill Gordon of the Mid Michigan Family Theatre, opened Dec. 11 and continues this week, closing on Friday, Dec. 18.

The family friendly play is set in the frantic Albert household. Mrs. Albert is directing a Christmas pageant but is having problems finding actors. Mr. Albert is an obstetrician who hopes that he won't have to deliver any babies the night of the play. The children are having issues at school with friends and teasing. Everything comes together, culminating in "a pageant of great sensitivity and gentle humor."

Cold Weather, Hot Chili

The Winter Bowl Soup & Chili Cook-Off is happening in downtown East Lansing Sunday, Dec. 6 from 1 to 4 p.m.

Downtown stores and merchants will have treats and activities for visitors, but there are also plenty of things going on outside.

A heated tent will host the soup and chili cook-off, a judged event with winners to be announced at 4 p.m. Sample and vote for your favorite or head for the marshmallow roast to help you stay warm. Purchase Starbucks hot chocolate for 50 cents or traditional roasted chestnuts, also available for half a dollar.

Santa, Mrs. Claus and the reindeer will be attending, and visitors can take a tour of downtown East Lansing in a horse and carriage ride.

Blue Collar Redneck

Jeff Foxworthy will be performing his observational stand-up comedy at the Wharton Center on Sunday, Dec.13 at 7 p.m.

Foxworthy is widely known for his "You might be a redneck if..." one-liners. He currently holds the record as the best-selling comedy recording artist and has released six comedy albums, two of which went triple platinum.

Besides stand-up, Foxworthy has also written 11 books, including Jeff Foxworthy's Redneck Dictionary: Words You Thought You Knew the Meaning Of and No Shirt, No Shoes, No Problem!, his autobiography.

Foxworthy has toured with Larry the Cable Guy and Bill Engvall as well as hosted "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?" He starred in his own sitcom and had a long-running weekly radio show, The Jeff Foxworthy Countdown.

The Preservation Hall Jazz Band will be playing the Wharton Center Friday, Dec. 4 and Saturday, Dec. 5 at 8 p.m.

The Preservation Hall Jazz Band gets its name from a famous music venue in New Orleans, the band's hometown. The band's mission statement is "to nurture and perpetuate the art form of New Orleans Jazz."

The Preservation Hall building itself has become a legend as well; originally built in 1750, the Hall remains, as the PHJB's Web site describes it, "a sanctuary...welcoming people...interested in having one of the last pure music experiences left on the earth."

Since the Preservation Hall Jazz Band first began touring in 1963, its large roster has changed. Many of the band's founding members performed with jazz pioneers, including Jelly Roll Morton and Louis Armstrong. The band has released over a dozen albums, and many of the band members have individual CDs as well.

The award-winning Broadway musical The Phantom of the Opera is coming to the Wharton Center. It opens Wednesday, May 19 and will run through Sunday, June 6.

Performances are Tuesday through Sunday. Tuesday through Thursday performances begin at 7:30 p.m., Friday performances begin at 8:00 p.m, Saturday performances begin at 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m., and Sunday at 1:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

The Phantom of the Opera is the longest running show in Broadway history and tells the story of a disfigured and masked musical genius who lives under the Paris Opera House and falls in love with a young soprano.

Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote The Phantom of the Opera musical in 1986 based on the French novel Le Fantome de l'Opera by Gaston Leroux. His musical adaptation has grossed an estimated 5 billion worldwide. Webber recently announced the debut of a sequel, Love Never Dies, coming to Broadway in Nov. of 2010.

Punk-pop veterans The Ataris will be playing at Mac's Bar on Sunday, Nov. 29 with special guests Resonant Soul, Big D and the Kids Table and Gunday Monday.

Band Refuses to Fade

Fade To Black, a Lansing-based band, is playing at the Basement 414 on Wednesday, Nov. 25 at 8 p.m.

Fade To Black formed in 1990 but broke up a year later. In April of this year, it reunited and is now recording an album to be released in 2010. The five-member band plays hard rock/punk/pop/reggae "and any other style that comes their way," explains its Web site.

In June, Fade To Black played its first reunion show at Rock for Doc, a benefit concert, and plans on having several more this year.

Lost Highway and the East Lansing Film Festival have collaborated to host the Lost Movie Night showing "The Return of the Living Dead" on Friday, Nov. 13 at 9:30 p.m. in Wells Hall on MSU's campus.

Lost Highway describes itself as "a desolate road trip through the backwoods of B-movies and cult films." It blogs about and shows a variety of movies that feature "beasts, blood and breasts." The East Lansing Film Festival is showing the movie as part of its November film society presentation.

Besides showing "The Return of the Living Dead," Lost Movie Night is giving away t-shirts, movies, graphic novels, jewelry and custom art. The best zombie costumes also win prizes, including a replica of Freddy's glove.

"Michigan Eats," an exhibition that opened in the Heritage Gallery at Michigan State University in April, comes to an end Sunday, Nov. 15 when the gallery closes at 5 p.m.

"Michigan Eats: Regional Culture Through Food" explores the state's regional specialties, the development of certain favorites and the importance of the distinctive tastes.

"Foodways" is the term used to refer to the system of ideals and beliefs surrounding food, its preparation and consumption, and the location of those traditions. The picture of Michigan to the left shows certain foods that are connected to certain places, such as pasties in the U.P.

Yvonne Lockwood, the MSU Museum curator of folklife, explains that "the biological necessity to eat is unquestionable; however, it is to culture, not biology, that we must look to explain why we eat what we eat."

Riverwalk Theatre's latest production, The Bremen Town Musicians, will be playing Friday, Nov, 27 through Sunday, Nov. 29 and again in Dec., on the 4th through the 6th. Showtimes vary from 7 p.m., 2 p.m or 4:30 p.m.

This musical of the children's classic follows a group of old, tired animals who leave their abusive masters to journey to Bremen and form a band.

Silver Anniversary

Celebrate the 25th Annual Silver Bells in the City on Friday, Nov. 20 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The night draws 120,000 attendees and features the Electric Light Parade, the lighting of Michigan's Official Christmas tree, fireworks over the Capitol building, horse-drawn wagon rides, free admission to a number of cultural institutions and local arts performances.

Silver Bells in the City take place in a variety of venues, such as the CATA Transportation Center, the Michigan Women's Historical Center and the State Capitol building itself.

The Electric Light Parade has over 50 entries, and each will be lit with strings and strings of Christmas lights. One entry has over 12,000 bulbs.

Join the hunger relief effort by taking part in the Empty Bowls Fundraiser on Friday, Nov. 13 at University Reformed Church in East Lansing.

Empty Bowls is an international grassroots fundraising effort where a group or artist creates and donates bowls and serves a simple meal, such as soup. Participants pay for the bowl, which is meant to serve as a reminder of everyone who goes without food.

Reach Studio Art Center, "a non-profit neighborhood place to do art," donated the bowls for this event. A short presentation will be made at 7 p.m. A donation of $5 for the meal and $15 for each bowl is recommended, and the meal is free for children or for those experiencing financial hardship.

No Garage But Plenty of Sales

The Lansing Center will host the Garage Sale Supersized on Saturday, Nov. 14 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

More than 100 sellers from the area have signed up to fill the 28,000 square feet of the Lansing Center with tables piled with bargains.

The project, a Lansing first, has been organized by three sisters. Beth Young, one of the three, says that the Garage Sale Supersized is open to "antique dealers, collectors, flea markets, people that are interested in getting all that stuff out of their attic and basement [as well as] organizations raising funds." Each vendor sets their prices because they are all independent of the event as a whole.

Organizing the sale "takes a little bit more time than what we've been working on it," laughed Young, but that isn't stopping them; the sisters are planning on holding the Supersized Sale twice a year.

The Michigan State University Museum along with the Cristo Rey Community Center is hosting El día de los Muertos activities and a multimedia exhibition that opened Oct. 28 and runs through Nov. 12. Taking place at the MSU Museum Community Gallery, the installation is "dedicated to the border-crossers fallen while pursuing a better life in the United States." University faculty will also examine and explain a diverse assortment of El día de los Muertos traditions

El día de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead in English, is observed Nov. 1 and 2 in Latin American cultures. Related to the Catholic holidays All Saints' Day and All Souls' Day and taking place the same days, the Day of the Dead honors the deceased in a variety of ways, including creating small shrines with pictures, flowers and candles with skulls as a major motif.

U2 to hit Lansing this summer

U2 has been missing Michigan on its tour stops since '05, but is making up for the snub come this summer.

This morning, it was announced that the Irish band-turned do-gooders will make a stop at Spartan Stadium on June 30. The stadium has a capacity of 75,000 with the last rock concert held there being the Rolling Stones in 1994.

The East Lansing show will be the band's only Michigan stop on the tour.

To keep up with the comedian-performing-at-the-Wharton-Center theme, add Robin Williams to the list. His "Weapons of Self Destruction" tour brings him to East Lansing Thursday, Oct. 29 at 7:30 p.m.

Williams has become a well-known name and face since his first film in 1977 and has won an Oscar, two Emmy awards, four Grammys and six Golden Globes during his career. This show has a parental advisory and is not recommended for children until 18.

Jerry Seinfeld is back on the road for his latest comedy tour and will be performing in Cobb Great Hall in the Wharton Center Thursday, Dec. 17 at 7 p.m.

December is weeks away, but tickets go on sale Friday, Oct. 23, and Seinfeld has been selling out shows for years. His observational brand of humor has made him immensely popular and successful despite the end of his semi-autobiographical sitcom, though Seinfeld lives on in reruns.

Seinfeld has said that doing stand-up for the applause of a few hundred is more satisfying than the worship of millions. Doing stand-up is where Seinfeld got started, and onstage with a microphone is where he is happy to be.

Bold Bo

Singing comic and YouTube sensation Bo Burnham will be performing at—where else—the Wharton Center Friday, Oct. 30 at 8:30 p.m.

At only 19 years old, Burnham has already made a name for himself. He started performing skits for his parents before he even went to school. His online videos have received thousands of hits, and Burnham has released two comedy albums. At a festival in 2008, he met filmmaker Judd Apatow and, not long after, appeared in Apatow’s movie “Funny People.” Burnham is currently writing a script for Apatow in which he hopes to land a role.

Burnham describes his on-stage personality as “a more arrogant, stuck-up version” of himself. In his skits, he often plays the guitar or piano and sings about human sexuality, race or gender. Always edgy and at times controversial, Burnham has been compared to a combination of Eminem and Ben Folds.

Elliot Street Lunatic with special guest Bump will be playing at Rubbles in Mt. Pleasant Thursday, Oct. 22 at 8 p.m.

The Lansing band has described its style as “psychedelic space rock,” and the band cites The Beatles, Radiohead and Muse as influences, if that gives you a better idea of its sound.

The band is young, formed in 2007. In addition, three of the four members of Elliot Street Lunatic are under the age of 25, which accounts for their high energy and dedication to having a good time, both onstage and off.

Nothing Says Christmas Like Heavy Metal and Lasers

Everyone has seen the video of the house decorated with thousands of Christmas lights pulsing to the rhythm of one of Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s many Christmas tracks; now you see them perform live at the Breslin Center Monday, Nov. 2 at 7:30 p.m.

Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s brand of symphonic metal is accompanied by pyrotechnics and a full light show; the band itself is comprised of more than 15 members. It may come as a surprise that of its four albums, three are Christmas compilations. The long-expected Night Castle will be released Oct. 27 and is a non-Christmas album.

Jazz Hands

Chicago-based Ramsey Lewis will be playing the Wharton Center Wednesday, Oct. 21 at 7:30 p.m. with vocalist Ann Hampton Calloway. Tickets range from $22 to $42.

Lauded for his incredible technique and performances, Lewis started playing the piano when he was four years old. Since then, he’s recorded over 80 albums, won three Grammy Awards and even carried the Olympic torch.

Some have criticized his style and the way he brings in elements of pop, blues, gospel, smooth jazz and more into his music. Whatever you call it, his brand of jazz is fun and easy to listen to.

The Ten Pound Fiddle Concert Series kicked off a new season recently. Yes, it’s a funny name but no, the instruments are not made of lead.

The Fiddle offers weekly concerts featuring some of today’s premier folk musicians as well as contra dancing, square dancing’s cousin. The series runs from October to June and tickets range from $5 to $25. Because of the variety of acts and audience size, the venue varies from week to week. Narnia comes to life in le Clanche de Rand's adaptation of C.S. Lewis' famous book, "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe" opening Saturday, Oct. 17 at the BoarsHead Theater.

Only four actors are used to portray almost a dozen of the well-known characters in this play. It's being performed at 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. this Saturday and the next.

Wine and Rhinos

For once, it’s ok to mix animals and alcohol.

Potter Park Zoo is hosting the first annual “Wine and Stein Safari” on Thursday, Oct. 15.

The $45 ticket lets you enjoy the zoo after hours, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. It also includes eight samples of wine or beer as well as light hors d’oeuvres. A raffle will be held with proceeds going to the Potter Park Zoo’s Black Rhino Expansion Project. Dianne, executive director of the Potter Park Zoo Society, explained that the zoo is "redoing the entire exhibit" to prepare an appropriate space for the rhinoceroses because they "have a couple waiting to come" to Potter Park Zoo. The zoo is expecting around 200 people for this event; if successfuly, Dianne says they "might be able to do two of these next year."

Folk Legend Bob Frank Comes to East Lansing

Folk music is somewhat of a niche genre but Bob Franke is a talented singer-songwriter by most musicians’ standards. He’ll be performing at the Orchard Street Pump House Sunday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. as part of its new acoustic music series, which is “a neighborhood kind of thing,” Smitty Smith of the Pump House says. Franke got his start more than 30 years ago in Ann Arbor and has since garnered national attention and enjoyed popularity in the East Coast for years. “He’s been around a long time,” Smith remarked. “A lot of famous people have covered his songs…[such as] Peter, Paul and Mary.” Franke hosted a radio program dedicated to folk music in Detroit for more than 20 years and has won many awards. Look no further than Old Town Oktoberfest, Mid-Michigan's only German style event happening October 9 and 10. Now in its fourth year, Old Town Oktoberfest features live polka music, dancing, authentic German food and plenty of beer and cider. Admission ranges from $13 in advance for a day to $25 for a weekend pass and includes three food and drink tickets and a 12-ounce souvenir beer mug. Oktoberfest runs Friday, 6 to 11 p.m. and Saturday, 2 to 10 p.m.; children 12 and under get in free and are welcome on Saturday from 2 to 6 p.m. And because this event is a fundraiser for the Old Town Commercial Association, you can feel better about yourself as you head towards the tent for one more apple strudel.
